Broadway Fast 5: January



It’s a new, exciting year full of Broadway announcements and exciting tours. Catch it all in this month’s Fast 5.



1.Rent launches 20th Anniversary tour
It’s time now to sing out! Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Rent will hit the road this fall for a 20th anniversary production. Based on the original direction by Tony nominee Michael Greif, Evan Ensign will restage the touring show. Casting and city stops will be announced at a later date.

2.Aladdin will go on tour, starting with stop in Chicago
With new horizons to pursue, the hit Disney musical Aladdin will launch a national tour in April 2017, beginning at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre. Casting for the touring production, as well as future engagements, will be announced at a later date.

3.Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Ethan Slater, a newcomer, has been cast as SpongeBob Squarepants in the Broadway-aimed The SpongeBob Musical. Actress Lilli Cooper is set to play Sandy Cheeks.

4.Run & Tell That! Hairspray Tapped as NBC’s Next Live Telecast
We can hear the bells…on NBC! The Peacock network may bring the 2002 Tony-winning musical Hairspray to the small screen as its 2016 live broadcast. According to multiple reports, the announcement was made by network honcho Bob Greenblatt at the Television Critics Association press tour.

5. We’ll be dancing (and singing) along in our living rooms: Grease- Live airs Jan. 31!
How’re those viewing party plans coming? Grease: Live will air on Fox on January 31. Aaron Tveit takes on the role of Danny with Julianne Hough as Sandy, Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, KeKe Palmer as Marty, Carly Rae Jepson as Frenchy, Boyz II Men as Teen Angel, Mario Lopez as Vince Fontaine, Jessie J as a performer and Carlos Penavega as Kenickie among others.
